AirPods Alternatives: What You Gain and What You Give Up
Most people searching for an AirPods alternative want the fit and the convenience without the price. Here is which parts of that are available cheaply, and which are not.

The short answer
For the open, non-sealing AirPods fit, the Soundcore AeroFit and similar open-ear designs are the closest cheap match. If you can accept a sealed tip, a $100 set beats standard AirPods on sound and battery. What no alternative replicates is Apple's instant device switching and Find My integration.
Disclosure: we earn commission on qualifying purchases made through the links below, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the order of our picks - here is how that works.
Work out which AirPods you actually mean
This matters because the two designs are completely different products and the alternatives are different too.
Standard AirPods have an open, hard-plastic shape that rests in the ear without sealing it. They do not block outside noise, which a lot of people specifically prefer - you can hear traffic, hear a colleague, and wear them for hours without ear fatigue or the plugged-up feeling.
AirPods Pro use a silicone tip that seals the ear canal, which is what makes their noise cancellation possible. Completely different fit, completely different experience.
If you want the open fit, a sealed earbud is not a substitute no matter how good it is, and most AirPods alternative lists ignore that entirely. If you want the Pro experience, AirPods Pro alternatives is the right page.
What only Apple does
Being honest about this is more useful than pretending the gap is zero.
Instant switching between iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV happens automatically and reliably. Third-party multipoint handles two devices and requires more thought.
Find My integration locates a lost earbud through Apple's network. Several alternatives have their own finder, and none has that reach.
Spatial audio with head tracking is implemented more convincingly by Apple than by anybody else at any price.
If you own several Apple devices and move between them constantly, those three are worth real money. If you own one phone, they are worth nothing, and the alternatives below are simply better value.

1. Closest to the open AirPods fit
Soundcore AeroFit
Open-ear design that stays put, without sealing your ear canal.

- Open-ear hook design
- IPX7
- Multipoint
- ~42h with case
If what you like about standard AirPods is that they do not plug your ears, this is the closest cheap equivalent. An ear-hook design holds the driver just outside the canal, so you stay aware of your surroundings - good for running on roads and for an office where you need to hear someone approach.
It adds things AirPods lack at this price: IPX7 waterproofing, multipoint pairing, and a case that runs to around 42 hours.
Sound is necessarily thinner in the bass than any sealed earbud, which is the physics of not sealing the ear rather than a flaw.
What you give up
Open designs leak sound both ways - people near you hear your music, and bass largely disappears outdoors or on a train.
2. Best overall value alternative
EarFun Air Pro 4
More features than standard AirPods for a fraction of the price.

- Adaptive ANC
- LDAC + aptX
- Multipoint
- Wireless charging
If you are willing to accept a sealed fit, this is simply a more capable product than standard AirPods: it has noise cancellation, which standard AirPods do not, high-bitrate codec support, which they do not, and a longer-lasting case.
The catch is the fit change. A silicone tip in the ear canal feels different, isolates you from your surroundings, and some people genuinely dislike it. That is a preference rather than a quality question.
On an Android phone there is no argument at all - this is the better product.
What you give up
Sealed fit rather than open, so it blocks ambient sound. No automatic switching between Apple devices.
3. Best if you cannot decide on fit
JBL Tune Flex
Ships with both open and sealing tips, so you can try both.

- Open and closed tips included
- ANC
- Multipoint
- App EQ
JBL's answer to exactly the problem this page is about: the Tune Flex includes both a sealing silicone tip and an open stabiliser, so you can find out which fit you actually prefer without buying twice.
Noise cancellation works properly only with the sealing tips in place, which is worth knowing before you test it with the open ones and conclude the ANC is broken.
For someone moving from standard AirPods and unsure whether they want to keep the open fit, this is the lowest-risk purchase here.
What you give up
Neither fit is quite as refined as a dedicated design, and the stems are bulkier than AirPods.
4. Best for Android users
Soundcore Liberty 4 NC
The alternative that makes the most sense outside Apple's ecosystem.

- Adaptive ANC
- LDAC
- Multipoint
- ~50h with case
On Android, AirPods lose most of their advantages - no automatic switching, no spatial audio with head tracking, and AAC rather than a high-bitrate codec. At that point you are paying Apple's price for Apple's design and nothing else.
The Liberty 4 NC gives Android users LDAC, strong adaptive ANC and multipoint for roughly a third of the money, and the app includes a hearing test that tunes the EQ to your ears.
This is the straightforward recommendation if you are not on an iPhone.
What you give up
Larger housings than AirPods, and the sealed fit again. The app is required to get the best out of them.
When to just buy the original
There are three situations where we would tell you to buy AirPods rather than an alternative, and it costs us nothing to say so.
You own several Apple devices and switch constantly. The automatic handoff is genuinely frictionless and no third party replicates it.
You take a lot of calls. AirPods have consistently excellent microphone performance, and that remains the clearest weakness of budget earbuds across the board.
You want the open fit from a company that will support it for years. Open-ear alternatives are a newer and less settled category.
Outside those, the best wireless earbuds under $100 are a better buy on every measurable axis.
The feature-by-feature reality
Stripped of brand, here is where the budget alternatives land against standard AirPods. Sound quality: alternatives win, because standard AirPods do not seal and cannot deliver bass. Noise cancellation: alternatives win outright, since standard AirPods have none. Battery: alternatives win on case capacity. Water resistance: alternatives usually win.
Call quality: AirPods win clearly. Device switching: AirPods win clearly. Fit comfort for long sessions: a genuine toss-up, and the reason the open-fit picks are on this page at all.
Common questions
+What are the best AirPods alternatives for iPhone?
Any of the picks here work fully on an iPhone for music, calls and ANC. What you lose is automatic switching between Apple devices and Find My. If you only use a phone, that loss is small; if you also use an iPad and a Mac daily, it is the main reason to stay with Apple.
+Is there a cheap alternative with the same open fit?
Open-ear earbuds with a hook or clip design are the closest match, and they have become a proper category rather than a niche. They do not seal the ear, so you keep the ambient awareness - and you also keep the thin bass that comes with it.
+Do AirPods alternatives work with Find My?
Not with Apple's network. Several brands offer their own find-my-earbud feature that plays a tone through the last-connected device, which helps indoors and not at all if you dropped one in the street.
+Are AirPods actually better sounding?
Standard AirPods are not, because an open fit cannot produce bass. AirPods Pro are competitive but not clearly ahead of good $100 sealed earbuds. Where Apple consistently leads is microphone quality and ecosystem behavior, not acoustics.
+Will a cheaper pair work with my Apple Watch?
Yes - any standard Bluetooth earbud pairs with an Apple Watch and plays music from it. What you do not get is automatic switching between the watch and the phone, so you choose the source manually.
