How to Get a Cheap Mattress

The mattress market is built around discounts, which means paying list price is almost always a mistake. Here is how to pay less without buying worse.

The short answer

Buy during a major sale event, insist on a published foam density and a trial period with free returns, and consider a floor-model or returned mattress from a retailer with a certified-clean program. Below about $350 for a queen, foam density drops to where body impressions appear within a year.

Never pay list price

Mattresses carry unusually high margins and the industry is built around discounting, which means the list price is a reference point rather than a price anyone is expected to pay. A mattress at 40% off is frequently the mattress's actual intended price.

The practical consequence: timing is the single biggest lever on what you pay. The same mattress can swing by 30-40% across a year, and the difference is larger than the difference between two mattresses at the same nominal price.

The major discount periods in the US market are Presidents' Day in February, Memorial Day in May, Labor Day in September and Black Friday in November. Those four are when boxed-mattress brands discount hardest and when models that sit above $500 at list fall into range.

If you can wait a few weeks for one of those, do. If you cannot, the rest of this guide still applies.

1. Best cheap mattress that lasts

Zinus hybrid

A real pocketed coil unit, which is what resists impressions.

Zinus hybrid - Close white blanket
  • Hybrid
  • Pocketed coils
  • Boxed
  • Widely available

Applying this guide's criteria at the low end, a hybrid with genuine pocketed coils is the construction that resists body impressions, because the coils carry the load rather than the foam.

Widely stocked, so it discounts regularly and returns are straightforward.

What you give up

Weak edge support, so sitting on the side sinks noticeably. Off-gassing smell for a few days after unboxing.

2. Best trial period

Nectar (during a sale event)

365 nights to decide, and it discounts into range regularly.

Nectar (during a sale event) - Close white blanket
  • 365-night trial
  • Free returns
  • Memory foam
  • Frequently discounted

If this guide's main argument is that returnability matters more than price, this is the mattress that embodies it - a full year to decide with free collection.

Wait for one of the four major sale periods and it lands under $500 for a queen.

What you give up

Needs a sale to fit this budget, and the memory foam construction sleeps warm.

3. The cheapest fix, if the mattress is sound

Mattress topper

Solves comfort problems for a fraction of a new mattress.

Mattress topper - Close white blanket
  • 2-4 inch foam or latex
  • $60-$120
  • No disposal needed
  • Immediate

If your mattress is firm and intact but uncomfortable, a topper fixes it for about a fifth of the price of replacing it, and there is no old mattress to dispose of.

It will not fix a sagging mattress - the topper sinks into the same dip - so check for a visible impression first.

What you give up

Does nothing for a mattress that has already sagged, and adds height that may not suit fitted sheets.

What to insist on regardless of price

A published foam density. Memory foam below about 3 lb/ft3 and polyfoam support cores below about 1.8 lb/ft3 are where body impressions appear within a year. Good budget manufacturers publish these; bad ones do not, and the absence is itself informative.

A trial period with free returns. Firmness preference depends on your weight, sleeping position and spine, and no specification predicts it. Read the terms: is there a return fee, who collects it, and is there a minimum break-in period before you can return?

A warranty that covers sagging at a realistic depth. Many warranties only cover impressions over 1.5 inches, which is a mattress that is already unusable. Shorter depth thresholds are a better warranty.

A real coil unit if it is a hybrid. Pocketed coils carry load better than foam at this price and resist impressions. Continuous or Bonnell springs transmit motion across the bed.

The cheaper routes worth considering

Floor models and returns. Many retailers sell returned mattresses that have been inspected and sanitized under a certified-clean program, typically at 30-50% off. The mattress has been slept on, which is either a dealbreaker or a bargain depending on your view, and the hygiene programs are regulated in most states.

Last season's model. Mattress brands refresh model names frequently with minor changes. The outgoing model is often substantially discounted and is materially the same product.

Buying a smaller size. A full rather than a queen saves meaningfully and is adequate for one person. Worth considering in a small room where the bigger mattress was always a squeeze.

Firmness exchanges. Some brands let you swap firmness once within the trial rather than returning. That is more convenient than a return and keeps you with the brand, which is why they offer it.

A mattress topper on an existing mattress. If the problem is comfort rather than support - the mattress is firm and intact but unpleasant - a $60-$120 topper solves it for a fraction of a new mattress. If the mattress has a visible dip, a topper will not fix it and will sag into the same hole.

What not to compromise on

Do not buy a mattress you cannot return unless you have slept on that exact model. This is the one rule we would not bend. Firmness is not predictable and a $400 mistake you cannot undo is worse than a $550 purchase you can.

Do not buy a used mattress from a private seller. Beyond hygiene, you have no idea of its age or how it has been supported, and bed bugs are a genuine and expensive risk. Certified-clean retail returns are a different proposition because they are inspected and regulated.

Do not buy on thickness. A 14-inch mattress of low-density foam is worse than a 10-inch one made properly. Thickness is a marketing number.

Do not ignore the foundation. A new mattress on slats spaced too far apart will sag regardless of its quality, and many warranties are void without adequate support. Most foam mattresses need slats no more than 3 inches apart, or a solid platform.

Matching firmness to how you sleep

Getting this right matters more than the discount, because the wrong firmness is unusable at any price.

Side sleepers generally want softer, so the shoulder and hip can sink enough to keep the spine straight.

Back sleepers generally want medium-firm - support under the hips with enough give for the lumbar curve.

Stomach sleepers generally want firm, because a soft mattress lets the hips drop and arches the lower back.

Weight shifts all of it. A mattress described as medium-firm feels soft to someone over about 230 lb and firm to someone under about 130 lb. Read reviews from people of a similar weight to you rather than the average.

Mattresses under $500 covers the specific models and which firmness each offers.

Common questions

+When is the best time to buy a mattress?

Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Black Friday are when the boxed-mattress brands discount hardest in the US. The same mattress can swing 30-40% across a year, so timing affects price more than choosing between brands does.

+How cheap is too cheap for a mattress?

Below about $350 for a queen, foam density typically drops to where body impressions appear within a year. That is the point where the saving turns into a replacement cost rather than a bargain.

+Are returned or floor-model mattresses safe to buy?

From a retailer with a certified-clean program, yes - those are inspected and sanitized under state regulations. A used mattress from a private seller is a different matter: unknown age, unknown support history and a genuine bed bug risk.

+Can a topper fix a bad mattress?

It can fix comfort - a mattress that is supportive but unpleasantly firm. It cannot fix support: if the mattress has a visible dip, the topper sinks into the same hole and the problem remains.

+Does the bed frame matter?

Yes, more than people expect. Most foam mattresses need slats no more than about 3 inches apart or a solid platform, and many warranties are void without adequate support. A good mattress on a bad frame sags regardless of its quality.
