Watches - under $100

Best Field Watches Under $100 (October 2026)

The field watch is the purest watch design: legible, small, tough and unpretentious. It is also the style that suits a budget best.

The short answer

The Seiko 5 SNK809 is the best field watch under $100 - a 37mm case, a legible dial and a robust automatic movement. If you want quartz accuracy and an easier strap change, the Timex Expedition and Weekender cover the same ground for considerably less.

Why field watches suit a budget better than anything else

A field watch was designed to be read quickly in bad light by someone who had other things to worry about. That produced a specific set of design rules: a matte dial that does not reflect, high-contrast numerals, a small case that does not snag, a simple strap, and nothing on the dial that is not information.

Every one of those rules is cheap to execute well. There is no polished case to finish perfectly, no complex dial furniture to apply by hand, no bracelet to machine. A $90 field watch can be a genuinely correct example of the design in a way a $90 dress watch cannot.

That is why this is the style we would point a budget buyer to first. You are not buying a reduced version of something better; you are buying the thing itself.

What to look for

Case size of 36-40mm. Field watches are historically small and look wrong when inflated. A 42mm field watch is a modern invention that misses the point of the design.

A matte or sunray-free dial with high-contrast numerals. Gloss dials reflect and defeat the purpose.

20mm or 18mm lug width with standard spring bars, so you can change the strap for a few dollars. Field watches are the easiest style to personalize and the strap transforms them.

At least 50m water resistance so rain and hand-washing are a non-issue. 100m is better and available.

A 24-hour inner track is a traditional feature that is genuinely useful if you ever deal with 24-hour time, and it looks right either way.

1. Best overall

Seiko 5 SNK809

The right size, the right dial and a mechanical movement.

Seiko 5 SNK809 - Escapement Time Pilot Flieger Chronograph
  • 7S26 automatic
  • 37mm case
  • Exhibition caseback
  • 18mm lugs

At 37mm with a matte black dial and crisp white numerals, the SNK809 is close to a textbook field watch, and the automatic movement means it is also a mechanical watch at a price where that is rare.

The exhibition caseback is unusual for the style and is a pleasant inconsistency - you get the military dial on the front and a visible movement on the back.

The included strap is the weakest part. A $15 canvas or leather strap transforms it, and the 18mm lug width is common enough that options are plentiful.

What you give up

Hardlex crystal that will scratch, no hand-winding or hacking, and a supplied strap most owners replace immediately.

2. Best quartz field watch

Timex Expedition Scout

Accurate, light and genuinely cheap.

Timex Expedition Scout - Escapement Time Pilot Flieger Chronograph
  • Quartz
  • Indiglo backlight
  • ~40mm
  • 50m water resistance

The Expedition Scout is the field watch for somebody who wants one to actually use rather than to think about. Quartz accuracy, Indiglo backlighting that illuminates the entire dial rather than a few glowing dots, and a price that makes it a non-decision.

Indiglo is the standout feature and is more practical at night than any lume on this page - you press the crown and the whole dial lights up.

The styling is correct: matte dial, 24-hour inner track, clean numerals.

What you give up

Mineral or acrylic crystal depending on reference, and the case finishing is basic. 50m means rain and hand-washing, not swimming.

3. Best cheap analog

Casio MTP-series field

Costs almost nothing and gets the design right.

Casio MTP-series field - Escapement Time Pilot Flieger Chronograph
  • Quartz
  • Day-date on many models
  • Light
  • Low price

Casio's analog MTP range is overlooked because it is sold at supermarket prices, and several references are close to a correct field watch: matte dial, clear numerals, modest case size.

For a watch to leave in a bag, lend to someone, or wear doing something that might destroy it, there is no sensible argument for spending more.

Battery life runs to several years and replacement costs a few dollars.

What you give up

Plated cases that will wear through at the edges, thin straps, and water resistance that is usually splash-only. It is disposable, and priced accordingly.

4. Best for strap swapping

Timex Weekender

Designed around changing the strap in ten seconds.

Timex Weekender - Escapement Time Pilot Flieger Chronograph
  • Quartz
  • Pass-through NATO strap
  • Indiglo
  • 38-40mm

The Weekender's slip-through strap design means changing it needs no tools and takes seconds, which makes it the cheapest way to own a watch that looks different every week.

The dial is clean and legible, Indiglo handles the dark, and the whole package is light enough to forget you are wearing.

It is more of a casual watch than a strict field watch, but it sits in the same family and serves the same purpose.

What you give up

Acrylic crystal that scratches readily, and 30m water resistance means splashes only.

5. Best upgrade within the tier

Seiko 5 Sports field (SRPG series)

The modern field Seiko, with hand-winding and 100m.

Seiko 5 Sports field (SRPG series) - Escapement Time Pilot Flieger Chronograph
  • 4R36 automatic
  • 100m
  • Hand-wind + hacking
  • ~39.4mm

The SRPG field references are the modern successor to the SNK809, and the upgrades are exactly the ones worth having: the 4R36 movement hand-winds and hacks, water resistance goes to 100m so swimming is fine, and the case is better finished.

At just under 40mm it is slightly larger than the SNK809 but still correctly proportioned for the style.

It sits at the very top of this tier and sometimes slightly above, so it is worth watching for.

What you give up

Frequently drifts above $100, and the supplied strap is still the usual Seiko weak point.

The strap is half the watch

Field watches respond to straps more than any other style, and a $15 strap change is the highest-return modification available in watches.

Canvas or sailcloth suits the style best and survives rain. Leather dresses it up considerably and will perish if you swim in it. NATO straps are the traditional military option, add a few millimeters of height, and mean the watch cannot fall off if one spring bar fails.

Check the lug width before buying - 18mm and 20mm are the common sizes here and are the easiest to shop for.

When to spend more

The field watch upgrade path runs to around $500, where the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical offers Swiss manufacture and genuine military lineage in a properly proportioned 38mm case.

Between $100 and that point, the improvements are sapphire crystal and better case finishing rather than a different kind of watch. The $100 field watch is already the correct object.

Common questions

+What makes a watch a field watch?

A matte, high-contrast dial built for fast reading, a modest case size, a simple strap and no unnecessary information. It is a design defined by legibility, which is why it translates so well to a budget - none of those requirements are expensive to meet.

+What size should a field watch be?

36-40mm. The design is historically small because it had to fit under a sleeve and not snag. A 42mm or larger field watch is a modern styling choice that works against the original logic of the design.

+Is a field watch good for everyday wear?

It is arguably the best style for it. Legible, unobtrusive, tough enough not to worry about, and it works with almost anything you wear. If you were buying one watch to wear every day on a budget, this is the category.

+Should I buy quartz or automatic for a field watch?

Quartz is more accurate, lighter and needs no attention, which arguably suits the design philosophy better. Automatic gives you a mechanical movement for a similar price. Both are defensible; the field style is one of the few where quartz does not feel like a compromise.

+Can I swim with a field watch?

Depends on the rating, and most budget field watches are 30-50m, which means rain and hand-washing only. The Seiko 5 Sports references at 100m are the exception on this page and are the ones to pick if swimming matters.
